Answer
Books are assigned call numbers based on subject. They are then placed on the shelf in alphabetical (a-z) order, and numerical (1-9999) order within each letter or letter combination.
The letters and numbers after the dot are called cutter numbers, and can represent several things, like name, place, or title. They are placed on the shelf after the first letters and numbers are considered, but alphabetically and then in DECIMAL order.
These call numbers are listed in the order their books are placed on the shelf:
- B2799 .E8 W6
- BP67.U6 S6 2019
- DT766 .L3313 2008
- DT1787 .T48 1990
- ML410 .B8 C36 2021
- ML410 .M5 B62
- PR788 .T72 B745 1999
- PR788 .T9 2011
There may be more than one cutter. Take them in order. After the cutter(s), there may be a year of publication, a volume number, or a copy number.
Call numbers are assigned so that similar subjects are shelved together. When you find a book on the shelf, there may be other books nearby you can use.
If you need help finding a book, ask a librarian. If you do not check out the book, place it on the blue cart by the information desk.
